I sold my software business and now I sell privately held and family businesses with $1M to $25M in revenue.
Building and selling my online software business was the most rewarding business endeavor in my professional life by far. There{s nothing more interesting and exciting to me than building and exiting a business and I{m honored to be able to help other business owners do the same.
I bought my first business with a partner, the local bike shop, at 15 years old in 1989. I didn{t know much about business at the time but I knew I wanted an opportunity to earn more than an hourly wage. The fire was lit.
During the first Dotcom bubble I sold software and training banging out a minimum of 100 dials and 2 hours of talk time each day. I then upgraded to selling software to the Fortune 1000, Federal Government and strategic accounts. Those of us who were there remember the wheels coming off and that{s exactly what happened to me as the company I worked for reduced staff then closed.
Determined not to be subject to anyone{s layoffs or to be selling vaporware anymore I found real estate. I was lured by an industry where there is infinite product and the only ceiling is self-imposed. I quickly moved into investment property and worked with developers and investors to find, buy, and often flip real estate in and around Boston.
A whiff of froth was in the air as the frenzy peaked heading into 2007 and in a stroke of perhaps luck or perhaps clairvoyance I turned my attention to distressed assets and became a commercial real estate auctioneer.
Nobody as deep in real estate as I was came out of that period unscathed. But I was fortunate to be on the frontline when the distressed sales started. I{ve been involved in the sale of hundreds of commercial and investment properties and paper including whole office parks, shopping malls, multifamilies, hotels, gas stations, and many more.
During that time I discovered how to know which banks and credit unions had distressed assets to sell and who to talk to about it. I created BankProspector and built the site DistressedPro.com. I grew that business for nearly 13 years and it gave me the opportunity to achieve financial freedom. I could suddenly be wherever I wanted whenever I wanted without worrying about money.
I optimized my business so that it was extremely profitable and truly ran itself, implementing systems and processes for all aspects.
When it sold I had 6 competing LOIs and we closed all cash in just 15 days.
